From Army Driver to Singer-Songwriter to Author

Tony Walsh is an independent author based in Bolton, Greater Manchester.

His route to becoming an author has been anything but conventional.

Tony’s working life has taken him from Army service and driving HGVs to hairdressing and a career as a legal executive. Alongside his professional life, he has been a singer-songwriter since the age of 16.

Now, in 2026, Tony has added another chapter to that journey: author.

His writing brings together imagination, history, people and experiences gathered throughout a lifetime.

Tony’s Journey

Tony's professional life has been anything but ordinary. Throughout the years, he has embraced a variety of careers, each contributing valuable experiences that have shaped both his personal outlook and his writing.

His background includes:

1969–1974 – Army

Tony’s early working life included service in the Army as a qualified HGV driver, with his time taking him to different parts of England and Wales and to the West German border.

1975–2015 – Hairdresser

Tony then built a long career as a fully qualified hairdresser, working with people from many different backgrounds and experiencing the changing world around him.

2016–2026 – Legal Executive

Later, Tony worked as a legal executive, developing another very different set of skills and experiences before moving towards semi-retirement.

From Age 16 – Singer-Songwriter

Music has been another constant throughout Tony’s life. He began writing and performing as a singer-songwriter at the age of 16.

2026 – Author

Tony’s latest chapter is writing. His first published stories draw on two very different worlds: Irish family history and the dramatic events of Malta’s Great Siege in 1565.

The Stories

Tony’s writing is not limited to one subject.

The Weight We Carried explores family, poverty, immigration and survival, beginning in 1920s Dublin and continuing through the Irish experience in England.

The Crescent and the Cross takes readers back to Malta in 1565 and the extraordinary struggle between the Ottoman Empire and the Knights of St John.

Tony believes that a lifetime of different experiences gives a writer something valuable: an understanding of people.
